While the Crystal Gems chase after Peridot in the Kindergarten, Steven and Garnet discover a dark secret while exploring its inner workings. After witnessing Steven and Connie fuse again, Greg explains to them how he learned about gem fusion from his time with Rose Quartz, hoping to pull it off himself in order to grow closer to her. Garnet has Pearl and Amethyst stay with Steven, who is exhausted from searching for Malachite in the ocean with the Gems, for a slumber party.
However, Steven is rattled by recurring dreams of Lapis Lazuli. When TV broadcasts are disrupted by a video signal emitted by Peridot from a Gem communication tower, Garnet chooses to fuse with Pearl into Sardonyx to destroy it, which dismays Amethyst. As the tower keeps being fixed, however, Steven and Amethyst are shocked to discover who's really behind it. While visiting an out-of-state motel with Steven and Greg, Garnet's frustration with Pearl's actions causes her to split up into Ruby and Sapphire again.
When they visit Onion's house, Amethyst rekindles her friendship with his mother, Vidalia, while he shows Steven around his room. Steven is asked by Jamie to participate in a play funded by Mayor Dewey about Beach City's founding, with Pearl stepping in to provide a more historically accurate script.
After the recent events, Pearl wants to redeem herself by capturing Peridot, who traps the Crystal Gems in an old, abandoned Gem spaceship. Steven and Connie must sneak into a hospital to retrieve Rose Quartz's sword from Connie's mother.
The Crystal Gems finally capture Peridot, but Steven suspects that she knows something and lets her live in his bathroom. After Steven explains Earth's workings, including rainstorms, to Peridot, she takes Steven to the Kindergarten to tell him more about the Cluster. The Crystal Gems and Peridot go to the family barn to build a gem drill that can take them to the Cluster's location. However, when Peridot and Pearl fight over who will lead the project, Steven suggests they build robots and compete with each other.
Peridot gets carried away with gem gossip, and unintentionally really hurts Amethyst's feelings. Garnet finally tells Steven the story of how she came to be a Crystal Gem. Steven has a birthday party out at the barn, and decides he has some growing up to do.
The Gems take a trip to the moon. Steven has doubts believing in someone. Steven sneaks a listen to a friend's audio diary. Steven discovers what happened to his sentient watermelons. Steven travels deep underground. Steven and Lapis Lazuli go on an adventure. Steven helps two friends get along at the barn. When an envoy of Rubies arrive, Steven proposes a game of baseball.
Steven discovers he has a new power while seeking a fresh doughnut. Steven helps Sour Cream put on a show. Steven visits Empire City with Greg and Pearl. Steven and Amethyst take a trip to Funland but run into trouble when their friend is too short to ride the rollercoasters.
Steven gets a new look into Lars' life. Steven and Connie get into a high-speed car race with their biggest foe. Steven settles a rivalry between restaurant owners. Kiki has nightmares and Steven intervenes.
An old friend returns. Steven and Greg take Lapis on a boat trip out to sea and find themselves in dangerous water. Steven, Pearl and Connie go to the Great North to hunt down a corrupted gem. Steven And Amethyst compete against each other while training with Pearl. Steven discovers something the Gems thought was lost to the past inside of Lion's mane. Steven and Amethyst visit some friends in the country but Amethyst isn't being herself. Amethyst tries to exact revenge with a showdown in the Kindergarten.
Steven and the Gems revisit the Moon Base. Steven gets marooned in his bubble. Steven and Peridot attempt to catch an elusive speedy corrupted Gem monster in the Beta Kindergarten. Steven and the Gems examine fusions. Steven visits the library with Connie and uncovers a long lost book.
Steven and Connie learn to focus better. Steven tells people's fortunes at Funland. Pearl, Steven and Amethyst go to a rock show.
Steven learns about Onion's secret group of friends. Greg tells Steven about their first winter together. A strange dream prompts Steven to search for answers. Steven and the Gems take off on a search and recovery mission. The Gems reach a space station that once belonged to Pink Diamond, and sneak in to rescue Greg, but in order to do so, they must play the roles they were made for, so as not to arouse suspicion.
This proves easier said than done as the humans there are guided through a strictly scheduled and regimented life. While Blue Diamond and Yellow Diamond argue over their diverging ways of coping with Pink Diamond's death, Steven, Greg and the Crystal Gems attempt to escape the space station before they are discovered. Connie tells Steven the story of how she, Peridot, and Lapis attempted to take the Crystal Gems' places as the protectors of Beach City while he was in space.
Steven uses his room in the temple to create a simulated image of Rose Quartz in order to try to experience what it would be like to know his mother.
He ends up confronting her with his troubled feelings about her complex legacy and her choice to create him. Ronaldo decides to join the Crystal Gems. However, once Steven lets him join the team, Ronaldo's self-centered attitude begins to try Steven's patience. When Amethyst quits wrestling at the abandoned warehouse, Steven continues doing so himself as Tiger Philanthropist. However, Steven soon begins to doubt the point of wrestling when the audience doesn't take to his new persona. However, Lapis Lazuli does not trust Navy's overly optimistic nature, knowing of her previous encounters with her.
Steven tries to search for secret messages Rose may have left him about his "magical destiny". Lion eventually leads him to a tape—but it's just an alternate version of the message from Rose he's already seen.
Steven and Connie join Connie's father on a stake out. Steven, Lars and Sadie get invited to a party with the Cool Kids. People disappearing from Beach City, and Steven tries to solve the mystery. Steven struggles to fix his mistakes. Steven and Lars are stuck inside Topaz and try to look for a way to escape.
After escaping from the Diamonds, Steven and Lars encounter and befriend the "off-colors", a group of "defective" Gems who live in hiding from Gem society. Lars defends them from security robots but is critically injured in the process. After Steven brings Lars back to life with his healing powers, he discovers that Lars now shares the same powers as Lion. Steven helps Mayor Dewey run a difficult campaign.
Greg and the Gems take Steven on vacation to help him relax. Pumpkin goes missing. Steven, Amethyst, and Peridot try to spruce up the Kindergarten. Steven and the Cool Kids start a band, but they have trouble finding their sound. Kevin is throwing a party, and Steven is invited. Lars rises to the occasion. Stevonnie finds themself alone on an adventure.
Steven takes Garnet to meet some of his new friends. Steven shoots a documentary that follows a local band as they get their first big break.
Garnet and Steven explore the most unlikely timelines in Beach City. Steven writes about the latest news of Beach City. Ronaldo spots something mysterious on the moon, and Steven goes to investigate.
Steven helps Pearl find her cell phone. Followed by hearing about the revelation, many problems ensue within the crystal gems' relationships.
Amethyst convinces Steven to take a break after all he's been through. Ruby decides to explore her own life separate from Sapphire, and has a Wild West adventure as a lonesome cowboy with the help of Steven, Amethyst, and Greg.
As Ruby and Sapphire plan their wedding, Sapphire wishes that their friends from the war could be there to see it. The wedding of Ruby and Sapphire, with the Gems and several Beach City citizens in attendance, goes without a hitch and Garnet reforms. Steven travels to visit family. White Diamond believes that Steven is Pink Diamond, so Steven tries to fit Pink's part so that way he can get close enough to White to ask her about helping the corrupted gems on Earth.
