As I stated above the method of updating the activity goal did not work for me, then I had an AH Hah moment. I force closed the activity app on my phone and then turned the phone completely off. I waited about 2 minutes and then turned it back on. The app now works on my phone. This simple act works as a fix for many problems, but it rarely comes to mind first.
