The game supports control via the keyboard, a joystick, or a racing wheel that can be configured to your specifications. After several hours of practice not to mention pausing and restarting a gazillion times I was able to win my share of races. Multiple car set-ups and wing adjustments are available to the user, be prepared to set aside plenty of time to experiment in order to fully realize their subtle effects.

The graphics in the game are exceptional. The car models and track environments are highly colorful and contain clean and detailed textures. Excellent lighting and shadow effects further enhance the visuals.

Nighttime racing is especially impressive'the tracks are way cool under the lights. In addition, the frame rate is fast and fluid, even on my year-and-a-half old notebook. The damage model is somewhat limited, but it provides a nice touch nonetheless. Unfortunately, engine sounds and collision effects are uninspiring. This is good for what has been implemented , but could be improved as it has limited camera views and is very hard to find a specific spot on the replay, without viewing the whole race.

Overall, it does an adequate job, but could be improved. A full featured career mode has been included, where good finishes are rewarded with sponsership opportunities. The more income you recieve, the more you can afford to improve the specifics of your car. This feature is very welcome, as few, if any racing simulations have included a feature such as this before. The tracks are very precise, and the car model is very detailed.

The graphics could be improved, as there is several minor clipping problems, although nothing which affects the overall playability of the game. The in-car view is good, and very realistic. The details on the tracks are outstanding, as the infields contain trailers and several small buildings, while the outside of the track is decorated with stands and trees, as well as billboards. Although very similar to its predecessor, the graphics are still very good, with few graphical problems. The engine sound is very good, but that is one of basically only a few sounds really noticed, the others being those of crashing and the announcer.

The crash sounds are good as well, but the announcer is extremely repetitive, saying the same thing at the beginning of every event. When a crash occurs, he says one of only a few sayings included within the game. There are also elements to it that make it accessible to those who are looking to try something new, but overall, this is a game that is aimed directly at sprint car racing fans.

As such, the developmental focus was clearly on the gameplay, seemingly at the expense of the audio and visual aspects of the game. In order to understand how the game works, you'll need a basic understanding of how the sport of sprint car racing works. Sprint car races are fundamentally different from other racing events due to the fact that they take place on dirt instead of pavement. With that in mind, the design of the vehicles is drastically different from that of formula or stock cars.

Sprint cars are lightweight, usually weighing less than 1, pounds, and very powerful, featuring high displacement engines that can crank out upward of horsepower.

Sprint cars regularly hit speeds of mph in races, and due to their light body weight, they need to employ a large wing that sits atop the vehicle and uses airflow to keep the car rooted to the ground. Also, taking into consideration that the tracks are ovular and that most of the turns consist of extended powerslides, the right rear tire is abnormally large to accommodate the extra weight and pressure that is put on it in each turn. World of Outlaws has a number of different modes to choose from.

The most basic of these are the time trial and single race options, both of which are self-explanatory. There is also an arcade championship mode that lets you jump right in and start as part of a professional racing team, complete with your own vehicle and free maintenance. The career mode is the most in-depth of all the options, as it puts you in the shoes of an aspiring sprint car driver. You'll start off with just enough cash to buy a basic car and enter a local event.

The goal is to win the event, or at least place high enough in it to begin building your reputation as a racer. One of the keys to success is impressing sponsors, who will offer you contracts if you do well enough. At first, because you're low on funds, you'll have to wait for events to come to your local track.

As your wealth and reputation grow, you'll be able to travel to larger events with larger prizes and more visibility. Each event consists of a battery of races and a somewhat complicated process of progression and elimination that you'll need to brave on your way to the prize. Players start off at the lowest classes in the game. You're given enough money to buy a pro stock machine and enough to pay for your entry fees and buy a couple of parts. You have to earn the rest of the money you get by performing well and knowing which parts to buy to keep yourself ahead of the competition.

Several series are available to join, and each are different from the others. From there, it's a constant struggle as you battle the field for the checkered flag, and simultaneously try to keep your car in racing condition. Winning races will not only earn you much-needed cash, but it will also attract the attention of various sponsors.

Eventually, you'll earn enough money to buy a better car and join the better series. The better the series, the tougher the competition, so it is up to you to make your name known in the world of racing.
